Composite Image—What Is It?

Composite Image by Rainbow Yu
A composite image is defined as a photograph, or graphic artwork (Turbo, 2012), created from representations, such as words and pictures to create an entirely new composition. Commonly categorized as a form of digital editing, a composite image might include subjects and/or backgrounds arranged from shots taken over time (Taylor, 2012). By thinking graphically about the arrangement of images, a designer might attempt to suggest a character, theme, issue, or situation in the work they produce.

It takes some skill and imagination to assemble a composite image and the task can be made easier by using some of the selection tools inside of the Adobe Photoshop application. Here, one of the newest and easiest ways to make selections is by using the Quick Selection Tool together with the Refine Edge settings. These settings allow designers to select complex images, such as those consisting fine or graduated edges, and combine them, seamlessly, for added impact to make a new art form. In the domains of photography and videgraphy, a composite image is also referred to as a montage.
